Dr. Michael Rauh
Objectives:
1) Present the rationale for the development of alternative transfusion products from ex vivo-generated blood cells.
2) Review the concept of embryonic stem cells (ESC), and recent technological advances that have enabled the reprogramming of differentiated adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC).
3) Summarize key studies that have provided biological insight and methodological advancements regarding ex vivo blood cell generation from ESC and iPSC sources.
4) Identify safety considerations and challenges to clinical feasibility that must be addressed prior to the realization of these emerging technologies.
